He joined Rotherham United in 1972 and helped the club to promotion to the 3rd division in 1974. In the same year he joined Blackpool who were then in the 2nd division staying there until 1983 when he joined Sheffield Wednesday where he served 11 years. He was awarded his first full International by Sir Bobby Robson in 1986 and in 1998 a further four games.

Alan was appointed fulltime to the England staff as team physiotherapist in 1994 under the management of Terry Venables for Euro 96. The World Cup 98 under Glen Hoddle. Euro 2000 under Kevin Keegan and World Cup 2002 under Sven Goran Erikson. His work was responsible for making sure that two of the nation’s biggest stars, Alan Shearer and David Beckham played in European and World Cup Finals.

In 2003 Alan was presented with a full International cap crafted out of solid silver by the Football Association for his services to England. Alan’s time spent working for the Football Association encompasses 24 years in total.

During this time, he was first appointed to the Semi Professional Team in 1978. 1982 he was appointed to the Under 21 Team winning the UEFA Cup in 1984. Then onto the B International Team and full International Team.

In 2015 he received a life time achievement award from the Football Medical Association for his service to football.

Alan retired in 2022 and sadly passed away in 2023.

Paul Smith BSc (Hons), MCSP, SRP, HCPC

Paul enjoyed a 23-year career in professional football working locally for Barnsley, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League in 1997 and later Rotherham United.

Further roles included a 6-year spell at Derby County with Premier League promotion achieved in 2007 and a further 8 years as Head Physiotherapist at Sheffield Wednesday.

Paul helped the club achieve promotion in 2012, Championship Play Off Final in 2016 and Play Off Semi Finals in 2017. Paul was also selected to be Team Physiotherapist for the David Beckham XI v Rest of the World for UNICEF at Old Trafford in 2016. Paul also had a spell at Premier League club Aston Villa.

Unbelievably, we also have another Alan Smith working with us. Alan has been known to the family for a very long time, going back to 1983 when he joined Sheffield Wednesday as an apprentice footballer and Dad was the physiotherapist. Paul has known Alan for 27 years now through crossing paths in football, working together at Aston Villa, and studying for their Physiotherapy degrees together many years ago.

Paul's younger brother Andrew has also worked at Aston Villa as Sports Masseur for 18 years, working alongside Alan.
